If you are out of work and have no unemployment will you take the first.. Any job that comes along? How about a part time position at Wal-Mart? Or could you work two part time jobs to equal a full time job? I only ask these questions because where I live several fast food restuarants and others are hiring. Plus I have a daughter who lives in another state who was telling me about her job interview....then told me if they did not pay her at least $8 an hour she was refusing the job! WHAT! I was like are you kidding me? She lives with some friends so her rent is cheap but even if she had her own place.. turn down a job during a recession because it does not pay enough. How many people who are out of work will not take a jog because they feel it is beneath them, money wise or otherwise?

The main thing that would put me off would be if working there still didn't bring in enough money to make ends meet. So, not only would you be working hard, you wouldn't have the time to look elsewhere to get/make more money, and wouldn't have enough to live on. [egdcltd]
My fiance and I have looked for work, I've had an interview once but the lady told me at the interview that after she called she'd decided to just switch the schedules and stuff and basically have people work more. She did say she'd consider and call me back, but never did. My fiance was upset, lol, as we had to go fairly early for a job I didn't get. I don't drive because I never learned, so he had to take me. Lol. Well in any case, I think that whether I'd take the job or not would depend on my wages and the location of the job. I live in a rural area, so if it's out of county I'd want atleast $7.50 an hour to compensate for the gas and drive, but if it's local I'd go so low as $6.00 if need be. The last job I had was when I lived in another county and the work was constant, sure I'd have a week off at a time, but then I'd be working 24 hour shifts, and since I couldn't drive the person who took me home would volunteer basically to take everyone home. Not that that wasn't nice, don't get me wrong because it was, but if it's 1:00 AM and you have to be back in at 5:00 AM it's not fun to take everyone home. Plus in a way I hated the city as it is, and lol, I think working at that job made me so thankful to love the country that much more! lol! For me I would take any job I just got done getting out of the hospital but now I'm ready to go to work..BUT because of health issue's I may have to trun down so job's and then there's my child support that told me 2 thing's you have to have a full time job (not to part time to make a full time to me that's stupid) and try to find one that pay's you around the same money.. For me it's about bill's and making sure kid get's his money..I hope that thing's turn around soon if not I will be doing 6 month's in county jail... [robertshay00]

I have never worked in a fast food place. I have done mainly office work however, I would work in a Mcdonalds or a Hardees for the minimum wage. I am desperate right now and will work anywhere. I used to make 10 dollars an hour working a customer service job. I will work for 6 dollars an hour if the job was offered to me. People should not be to picky now a days. With the economy the way it is, you shouldn't turn down anything. [seabeauty]

People who don't take a job because its beneath them are stupid, yea I said it. I have two degrees and I lost my job and my house and I "got" to work in a warehouse shipping oil bearing parts, I was thankful not ungrateful. That job led to us traveling and now I don't work (other than freelance writing) so to anybody who think shoveling elephant dung is below them I challenge you to live without for a while, you'll appreciate the sweat on your brow and the ache in your back. I always said, even when I was in a high paid job, that if it came to it I would clean toilets to make a living. There are only one or two jobs I would not consider, and those involve removal of clothing. Bring on the supermarket and fastfood jobs, Id do one now if there were any going! [Ritz100]
Thanks for your suggestions. I actually teach computing and internet skills, so I have put up notices in my local supermarkets and bars. Unfortunately I live in Spain, but Spanish is not my native tongue, so getting jobs here for a Brit is almost impossible, they keep them for the Spanish. I have a very limited audience in the other Brits that are in my town, but there are a few hundred so I might strike lucky. Will let you know if anything comes up [Ritz100]
If I found myself out of work, I would take any work that came my way. We will always have bills to pay, keep food on the table and a roof over our heads. In this time during a recession any employment is good. Although I would say a lot of employers will take advantage of this and just offer the minimum wage. [thezone]

If I was going to take such a job I would do it part time; the job might be too monotonous to do full time. But doing two different jobs part time would be easier to take. I worked in restaurants as a teen, and got a free meal every shift. You can usually get an employee discount if you work for a retail store, so some jobs can have benefits that help make up for the low pay. [Idlewild]
I am out of work, have been since June of last year. I am now collecting unemployment, which is $900.00 less than what I was making. The way I see it is that I am struggling with unemployment money, so it would be even worse if I took a low paying job, that wouldn't even cover my rent. If I were to take a job for $8.00 that would equal $1280.00 per month gross. When taxes are taken out, it may drop down to about $900.00. My rent is $975.00, so that wouldn't even cover my rent. It is a no win situation, get a job that won't pay your rent or pass it by. I am sure my landlord wouldn't want to hear that I am not making enough money to pay him. My lease is not up until next year, so what's a person to do. In your daughter's case, since her rent is cheap, I think she should accept the job, mayber her salary would cover her expenses. Hey I am of the mindset that if you can draw unemployment you should draw it all out. I agree that it makes no sense to take a job that is less than your unemployment. However that money is going to run out, right? At that point you will still not be able to pay the rent. So if there is nothing but minimum wage what do you do? Isnt some money better than no money? You may have to move to a cheaper place to live or get a roommate if the landlord agrees, and with the whole country being in a recession they probably do not want an empty piece of real estate... I would not turn down any job during recession. I think it probably because ur daughter would have been confident enough to find a better job which suit her more. If she is not desperate, maybe u could take a deep breath and make a pray for her in getting a better job in very soon time. Apparantly there is a "flip side" too! I tried to get a job at Micky D's and they never, ever got back to me. I'm not sure if you get freebee food but I was hoping you might and if that was the case I wouldn't mind working for minimum wage. In the long run you'd have money left over if you don't need to do expensive grocery shopping right? The humongous billboard they have outside asking for people to apply is actually still there! Go in and they say go to the website. You go to the website and fill in the stuff and check you mail and spam folders regularly to see the reply. But it isn't there. So you fill in stuff again. And still nothing. That was before the credit crunch though. Maybe they will be nicer now to over qualified job-seekers. So I'd say that getting a job in burger joint isn't as easy as most people would assume! [aplaza]
Sorry, I think she's a fool. $8 > $0 And, those places actually have great advancement programs! For instance, my first job was at McDonalds. Granted, I was 18, just out of high school and this was 25+ years ago... I worked full-time, had benifits and was able to go to college FT. Within a year I was a manager trainee, still going to school FT and raising a baby. I worked there for about 3 years, most of that as a manager and trainer. Had I stayed, I most likely would have either gotten my own store (to manage, not own!) or gone into the local corporate office as a regional trianer. Times were pretty bad when I left there. There were no jobs anywhere and IF we had a crew opening, at least 50 people applied - for a $3.25/hour job (I think that was minimum wage then). I left because we moved to a place that had some jobs. My boss gave me a great letter of recommendation and I landed a job as a swing manager in a restaraunt chain. It was a great stepping stone and a great learning experience. The skills I learned at McDonald's help me even today - as a CPA. Too many people today think that a job is beneath them, when in fact they refuse to actully WORK. I do hope your daughter reconsiders because if you look past the "working at McDonald's" mentality, it's a great opportunity. They probably even have programs now where they'll pay for your education... [reinydawn]
I think if one is hungry enough they will lower their standards and take that job at McDonalds. There is nothing wrong with working Walmart, or fast food if you need to pay the rent or put food on the table. A lot of shifts are like 6 hours in some fast food joints, so you could work 2 part time jobs if necessary. I wouldn't feel bad for someone who refused to work because it didn't pay what they want.
